  • WWE Legend SGT Slaughter joins members of the Heroes of the Diamond Tour. The players have a saying that you "trade one uniform for another." Many of them come off their active duty and report right to a baseball diamond, just like they did on Saturday while winning their exhibition game 4-2 against the York Revolution. Some players stay for a few weeks, others are gone in a day to serve the country. "This is the most unique and amazing team I have ever coached." said field manager Steve Dillard, a former major leaguer making his debut. But, that's the nature of the beast with this type of team, which began in 1990 when President George H.W. Bush wanted to raise morale of the troops. The number of military teams worldwide now stands at more than 40 stationed around the world. But there is only one All-Star team.
"We have global tryouts," Heroes general manager Crash Allvord said, "but mainly all the coaches for those teams have to do is recommend a player. Getting here is tough, earning a starting spot is even tougher. This is not a normal team."
  • The Heroes of the Diamond kicked off the 2010 "Red, White and Blue Tour" presented by Ashford University at spring training in Florida taking part in a number of events during Navy Week. The team also participated in the Caps for Kids program at local hospitals in Tampa and visited the Toronto Blue Jays complex in Dunedin.
  • Armed forces personnel from all services, U.S. Coast Guard, Department of Defense, Homeland Security and First Responders are invited to tryout in an effort to earn the opportunity to represent their service and compete for one of only 25 roster spots on this successful, innovative and only joint baseball team in the world. Spring training will commence in San Diego California this spring and include games against Professional Baseball Teams in California, Arizona, Florida and Mexico.
